Join SOC & SPA and authors of Shattered: Inside Hillary Clinton’s Doomed Campaign and The Devil’s Bargain: Steve Bannon, Donald Trump and the Storming of the Presidency to reflect on the one year anniversary of the historic 2016 presidential election and how the aftermath will affect the 2018 midterms and future elections. Political journalists Jonathan Allen and Joshua Green will recount dramatic revelations about critical campaign dynamics that shaped this surprising election. AU Faculty members Betsy Fischer Martin and Molly O’Rourke will moderate a conversation, including questions from the audience, to examine the early landscape for next year’s critical midterm elections and how both parties can use the lessons from 2016 to communicate with voters and establish their leadership narratives for the future. The authors will be available for book-signing (and books will be on sale at the event).
Jonathan Allen, a national political reporter for NBC News, has covered Washington and elections for more than 15 years. He is a co-author of two New York Times bestselling books and a winner of the Dirksen and Hume awards for his reporting on Congress. A native of the Washington metropolitan area, Jon graduated from the University of Maryland and lives on Capitol Hill with his wife and their two small children.
Joshua Green is a national correspondent for Bloomberg Businessweek, and a CNN political analyst. Previously, Green was an editor at the Atlantic and the Washington Monthly, and a political columnist for the Boston Globe. He regularly appears on CNN's shows, HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, and PBS’s Washington Week and Frontline.
This is part of a series organized by the School of Communication (SOC) and the School of Public Affairs (SPA) at American University. This event honors the legacy of Dotty Lynch, a renowned political journalist, pollster and faculty member who instilled in students a love of politics and news. Dotty was the inaugural director of the Master’s program in Political Communication which is jointly administered by SOC & SPA.
